Gull Lake Chain Fishing Tips:
Gull Lake has the perfect habit for growing large northern pike. The lake is blessed with an excellent supply of ciscoes and tulipee. These deepwater minnows are often described as sticks of margarine with fins. A Gull Lake northern pike grows quickly on these high-calorie diets. Key locations on the Gull Lake Chain are deep water breaks near large shallow water flats. Large pike will patrol these locations looking for their next meal. Trolling spin bait rigs is an effective method of catching large northern pike throughout the summer months on Gull Lake. A spin rig is a large 1-2 oz single blade spinnerbait with no rubber skirt. The bait has a large 3x strong hook. Good Gull Lake Chain colors are white/silver, red/white, and black/orange. The spin rig is typically tipped with a 4 to 5-inch sucker minnow. Hook the minnow from the chin up through the center of the head. Back trolling is an effective method for covering water on Gull Lake. Good speeds are 1.5 to 2.3 mph. Pitch the bait back about 30 to 40 feet behind the boat and engage the reel. Try to keep the line at 45 degrees to the water. The key to fishing a spin rig is pumping the rod. Let the bait tighten the line and then give it a 2 to 3-foot pull. Then allow the bait to slowly flutter back down on a taught line. Gull Lake pike usually hit this bait as it falls. Repeat the process every 20 to 30 seconds, always checking for the weight of a big northern pike before giving the spin bait another pull. Some strikes can be very light. Big pike are attracted to the lure when it buzzes upward but will often take it as it falls back down. A bite sometimes feels like nothing more than some added weight until the unmistakable tug, tug gives the fish away. Lower the rod for a moment before setting the hook with a long, firm, sweeping of the rod. Tell your Gull Lake fishing guide to grab the net. You've just hooked one of those big Gull Lake northern pikes. Please practice catch, photo, and release with these big toothy monsters. A 20 lb northern pike on Gull Lake is close to twenty years old. Northern pike in the 3 to 5 lb range make excellent table fare, especially if your Gull Lake fishing guide knows how to make them boneless by removing the y-bones.
