Gull Lake Fishing Tips:
The Gull Lake Chain is actually a reservoir with a river flowing through it. The Gull River enters Gull Lake on the north end. The river current attracts spawning walleyes in the spring but the majority of the Gull Lake walleyes will have long finished spawning before the mid-May walleye fishing opener in Brainerd, Minnesota. Large shallow water weed flats near known spawning areas are prime early-season walleye locations. The shallow water flats warm quickly and support large numbers of insect life, which also attracts baitfish. The perfect place for post-spawn walleyes to feed, Walleye will quickly search out these areas once they have recovered from the rigors of spawning. Key water depths are 4 to 6 feet. The larger the flat size the better. Key early-season flats for early season Gull lake walleyes include; Grassy, Polks, and the Hayfield. The key to catching early-season walleyes on Gull Lake is getting the bait away from the boat. Shallow water fish will have a tendency to move away from the boat. A jig tipped with a shiner minnow is an effective bait in these situations. The key is to use as light of a jig as possible. 1/16 ounce jigs with an oversize 3x long shank hook are perfect in these situations. Let the boat drift along parallel with the break as you pitch the jig 30-40 feet away from the boat. Let the movement of the boat take up the slack in the line. Give the jig about a 1-2 foot twitch and then let it settle back to the bottom. Carefully feel for any added weight before twitching the jig again. Most walleyes will pick the jig upon the fall. Pull up on the rod slowly when you feel any added weight. A hungry walleye will usually give itself away with a gentle tug, tug back on the line. Lower the rod, reel up the slack, and set the hook with a long sweeping motion. Get the net! This is early season Gull Lake walleye fishing at its finest.
