Whitefish Chain Fishing Tips:
The Whitefish Chain is an exceptional bass fishery. Every one of its thirteen lakes has largemouth bass and a few have smallmouth bass too. The Whitefish Chain hosts several major bass fishing tournaments throughout the fishing season. The Chain has every type of bass fishing structure a fisherman could want. One of my favorite types is bass fishing on the Whitefish Chain is dock fishing. Something I rarely get to do when working as a fishing guide. Big bass will seek out the shade they provide and relate to them throughout the day. The key is finding the docks that also have access to deeper water. Sometimes all it takes is a larger run-about on a lift with 200-300 hp engines on its back. These types of docks are worth exploring. The big engine has just enough power to dig out a hole behind the lift. Sometimes, depending on how aggressive the owner of the boat is, the blowhole can be 2 to 3 feet deeper than the surrounding water. Larger bass love these locations. The best lure for these spots is a 4-inch tube. The trick is to skip the bait under the dock as far back as possible. This is one of the reasons I so seldom fish this technique on guide trips. A good Whitefish Chain fishing guide finds techniques that allow even the most unskilled angler to catch fish. This technique takes some time to master but the benefits are worth it. This is the closest thing to hand-to-hand combat you can have with a bass. The fishing rod needs to be heavy action with a length of 7 to 7 1/2 feet. The reel should be spooled with a 30-50 lbs test line. Skip the bait as far back a possible under the dock into the shadiest areas and then let the bait fall slowly to the bottom. Sometimes the strike will be nothing more than a twitch in the line. Rear back and set the hook as hard as possible when a bite is detected. The key is to get the bass pointed in the right direction. It is the only way to keep them from wrapping you up on the dock poles.
